Mercedes Schlapp's job as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't simple. She has to deal with a president that acts as his own director of communications and a myriad of legal disputes which could disrupt the White House's strategy for messaging and Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own controversies. Schlapp kept her focus throughout the process, collaborating closely with the White House's legislative and political affairs teams as well as policy shops and more general communications functions to ensure policy implementation. So far, Schlapp is focusing on safety at school concerns, addiction issues infrastructure, international trade and addiction. There isn't much interaction with the media in the job she has. The media spotlight was on her in the wake of being announced as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp does not have an easy job as White House strategic communication adviser. Mercedes Schlapp must deal with an administration that is roiled by a variety of problems, such as a president acting as the president's own communications director and Cabinet Secretaries who are embroiled in their respective controversies. Schlapp did not change her focus, and worked closely with White House policy and political teams. The main areas of her concern has been around issues such as security at schools, trade, and the opioid epidemic. The position she holds, however, means that Schlapp does not have contact with media. However, she attracted a lot of interest in March, when her name was floated as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. The fight has been bitter. Schlapp's allies fought with Tony Sayegh over the media. Schlapp told that the Washington Examiner that she spoke with Sayegh about the recent article that was negative on him.
